How could we improve Pillow?

  1. Smart Wake up on the Apple Watch

    Jawbone, Fitbit, etc. all have smart wake up technology. This may be the most important feature of a sleep monitoring app. The smart wake up does not work with the Apple Watch. Please work on this and you will have the BEST app!

      Smart wake up relies on real-time data processing that can only be done on the iPhone at the moment, since third-party Apple Watch apps cannot run continuously in the background. In that regard, we don’t have much data to work with compared to sleep tracking with the iPhone. However we are working an big update to that will also improve Smart Wakeup on the Apple Watch as well. Stay tuned!

    • Automatic sleep tracking every night!

      There is a new app in the store called Auto Sleep that automatically tracks your sleep every night, even if you forget to open the app before you fall asleep!

      It uses the motion sensors on the watch, so even if you fell asleep before you remembered to start the app, when you wake up in the morning and open the app, it will still upload your movement data from the night and give you an analysis.

      So the only time you have to remember to open the app before you fall asleep is if you want the sound recording…

        We are currently exploring ways to perform automatic sleep detection and tracking along with a new way to edit sessions. We must make sure that Pillow sleep analysis algorithm remains accurate and reliable so we can’t give an ETA yet.

          This is currently not possible in iOS/watchOS. Siri commands work in certain use cases, also called “domains.” Apple is planning to add more domains in the future and hopefully one of them will include sleep as well.

        • Nightstand Mode

          In my old sleeping app, Sleep Cycle (Northcube AB), all you had to do was place your device on the furniture next to your bed and it would analyze the sounds and movements solely through the microphone. Better yet, they had a feature where you tapped the furniture twice and it would snooze. I would LOVE to see something like this, for the people that don't like sleeping with their phones directly next to them.

          • Edit sleep length when stop forgotten

            I'll sometimes wake up but forget to hit the stop/analyze function & it'll show that I've slept for 12 hrs with 6 of those hours awake, throwing off all stats. If we could edit/delete the excess end time showing awareness, then all stats would be more accurate.

            • Pausing the app

              Occasionally I wake early and read for half an hour or even a couple of hours then fall back asleep for a few. I would like to be able to pause the app or re-start it like some people have suggested...and have the still considered one sleep session if possible.

                We’re working on feature that will let you tell Pillow “I’m awake” so that it will properly register this type of activity as well.

              • Smarter Naps

                I think that the nap setting should be improved by starting the nap timer once the app detects the person has fallen asleep. It takes people a while to fall asleep and if it takes 10 minutes to fall asleep, you would be getting 10 minutes for your nap, not the full 20. If this tweak is applied, the full nap would be achieved. I believe it would benefit everyone.

                • Don't require me to say when I am going to sleep.

                  When I go to bed I am often very wound up. I read or watch ASMR videos to fall asleep. I need an app to notice when I fall asleep and not require me to tell it since I very rarely am able to fall asleep when I decide to.

                    Thank you for your feedback. We are exploring ways to do automatic sleep tracking. However for technical reasons the available data we have less data to work with so we must make sure our sleep analysis remains reliable and accurate.

                  • Sleep time in minutes instead of fractions

                    Seeing something like "7.7 hours" makes no sense to me. We count time in minutes, quarters and halves, I'd much rather see the exact time I intend to sleep through the night. Trying to figure out 7/10 times 60 is unnecessarily cumbersome.

                    • Silent phone, vibrating watch alarm option.

                      Use a vibrate alarm on the watch instead of an audio alert on the phone so you only wake up one person and not the whole room.

                        Hello everyone,

                        Pillow on the Apple Watch runs in the background while tracking sleep. At the moment watch OS does not allow access to haptic feedback to third-party apps that run in the background unless they use short term alarms using the Workouts framework which is beyond the scope for Pillow.

                        We are optimistic that upcoming updates of watchOS and the hardware of the Apple Watch will lift those restrictions and we will be more than happy to makes this happen.

                      • Ability to adjust sleep time

                        I often forget to turn off the app in the morning. I would like to be able to edit the time when I forget.

                          • More consistent data sync from watch to phone

                            My use case is possibly unusual, I have 2 apple watches - but this allows me to use your app at night as well as having a fully charged watch in the morning.

                            I wear my original apple watch overnight. In the morning I get up, end my sleep recording, wait for the analysis and the app of the phone to suggest it has sync'd the data. I then force press the watch app and force a manual resync of the data to phone for extra confidence. I then immediately take off my original watch and put a series 2…

                              The upcoming version of Pillow will introduce a completely re-written apple watch that will dramatically improve the reliability of data syncing as well as the simplicity of use. That said, we are still limited by the way the syncing framework currently works on watchOS so we will keep monitoring any progress and incorporate any improvements as they become available.

                              • Make sleep quality more transparent

                                I often can't make sense of why my sleep quality was significantly higher/lower than another night even though the duration and the sleep phases were very similar.

                                It would be nice to get an overview of the factors driving the specific sleep quality.

                                  • Age consideration for sleep quality

                                    Scientifically speaking, age has a big effect on your sleeping patterns. While older adults often bounce between R.E.M. Sleep and deep sleep in rather shorter periods of time, teenagers often spend most of their cycles in longer periods of deep sleep with less frequent periods of R.E.M sleep. From my experience with this app, I think that age would improve the "sleep quality" by considering age as a factor when calculating sleep quality due to general sleeping differentials between different ages.

                                          Pillow’s sleep analysis algorithm relies in part on motion data acquired by the Apple Watch. The only way to retrieve those data is to explicitly start/stop a session. Also, the microphone, speaker and haptic feedback on the Apple Watch cannot be used by third-party apps that run in the background, like Pillow due to watchOS limitations so we must use iPhone’s. All the above reasons force us to require that Pillow is open on the iPhone and then press Start on Pillow on the Apple Watch. Hopefully, those restrictions will be lifted in future updates of watchOS, and then we will be more than happy to simplify.

                                        • When using nap mode, start the timer when (apple watch) detect that user is asleep.

                                          I don't know about others but I would assume that when people want to go for a 20mins nap, obviously they don't fall asleep right after they press start on the timer. It does take some time for people to actually fall asleep, hence they don't get that full 20mins or 45 mins or 1.20hours of recommended rest.

                                          So I want to suggest, if you make the app so that upon pressing start, the sleep timer starts when the apple watch detected that the person have actually fallen asleep. (I am not so sure myself how you can do this…
